چکیده
Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) are known to alter the emission of vicinal fluorophores through the nearfield interaction, leading to either fluorescence quenching or enhancement. Much ambiguity remains in the experimental outcome of such a near-field interaction, particularly for bulk colloidal solution. It is hypothesized that the strong far-field interference from the inner filter effect of the MNPs could mask the true near-field MNP–fluorophore interaction significantly. Thus, in this work, a reliable internal control capable of decoupling the near-field interaction from far-field interference is established by the use of the DNA toehold concept to mediate the in situ assembly and disassembly of the MNP–fluorophore conjugate. A model gold nanoparticle (AuNP)–Cy3 system is used to investigate our proposed toeholdmediated internal control system. The maximum fluorescence enhancement is obtained for large-sized AuNP (58 nm) separated from Cy3 at an intermediate distance of 6.8 nm, while fluorescence quenching is observed for smaller-sized AuNP (11 nm and 23 nm), which is in agreement with the theoretical values reported in the literature. This work shows that the toehold-mediated internal control design can serve as a central system for evaluating the near-field interaction of other MNP–fluorophore combinations and facilitate the rational design of specific MNP–fluorophore systems for various applications.

No Evidence That Sleep Deprivation Effects and the Vigilance Decrement Are Functionally Equivalent: Comment on Veksler and Gunzelmann (2017).
Veksler and Gunzelmann (2017) make an extraordinary claim, which is that sleep deprivation effects and the vigilance decrement are functionally equivalent. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, which is missing from Veksler and Gunzelmann's study. Their behavioral data offer only weak theoretical constraint, and to the extent their modeling exercise supports any position, it is t...
متن کاملSurgery in low-income countries during crisis: experience at Médecins Sans Frontières facilities in 20 countries between 2008 and 2014.
The global burden of trauma and surgical conditions fall disproportionately on lowand middle-income countries (LMICs). 2 Inopportunely, developing countries are least equipped to provide essential surgical care. Consequently, LMICs have a significant burden of unmet surgical needs. When these fragile health systems are disrupted by conflict, a natural disaster or an epidemic the volume and qual...

I provide a brief commentary on the brilliant accompanying study of Nikolas et al. concerning risky bicyclist-automobile behavior in ADHD and typical youth. The sophistication of the simulator and procedures and the number and precision of measurements are remarkable and afford us an excellent glimpse into the specific mechanisms by which previously documented injury risk in such natural settin...

متن کاملCpG Oligodeoxynucleotides Downregulate Placental Adiponectin and Increase Embryo Loss in Non‐Obese Diabetic Mice
PROBLEM CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) can induce immunological changes in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice and increase embryo loss, but little is known about the mechanism. This study aimed to determine the role of adiponectin in CpG ODN-induced pregnancy failure. METHOD OF STUDY Oligodeoxynucleotide 1826 was intraperitoneally injected to NOD mice, and ODN 2216, ODN 2006, and ODN 2395 were u...
